Email Marketing…Should Campaigns be Self-Designed?

One of the worries all business owners and marketers encounter is the sensation that by working with an outside firm on email marketing campaigns, that their initial goals and ideas might be overlooked.  As a result, sometimes the election is made to self-design email campaigns.  Despite the draw to this idea, doing so simply out of the concern that one’s ideas will be pushed aside can produce a myriad of problems.

Spam…not just “ham” in a can, but for internet marketers, spam is something to shy away from.  Spam emails usually get deposited into spam or junk folders, and prospects never even see that you’ve emailed them before they hit “delete.”  When an email recipient assigns the label of spam or junk to your email message, the rippled effect can negatively influence the success of your future campaigns.  If you send Sue an informative email about the computer mice you sell, and she clicks and drags your email to her junk folder, it won’t simply get trashed.  Your email address gets noticed by the server.  If enough recipients move your message to the spam folder, your email address can become black listed, which means the possibility of automatically being detected as spam or junk.

Another issue commonly encountered is that of the preview pane.  This issue was briefly alluded to in the previous discussion about mobile email marketing, but should be addressed not only for viewing emails on smart phones but also on computers.  Outlook, Netscape, Firefox, Webmail…just a few examples of the many email client programs available to consumers.  All of them view email differently, and many of the offline email clients such as Outlook feature a preview pane that shows the receipient a bit of the email before they decide to open it.  These preview panes, or the amount of characters accepted per subject line (as viewed with many online email clients, such as Gmail) are limited in size and space, and are often unique.  Presenting an engaging email campaign isn’t just about the size of the email message (in pixels) but also about what is most crucial to display and how it ought to be displayed.

Mangaing opt-ins and opt-outs is necessary in order to comply with federal regulations regarding email marketing campaigns.  Without the proper knowledge and technology, this can be a time consuming endeavor.  Culling mailing lists manually is a good way to tire oneself and make errors that could not only frustrate prospects, but also break laws.

Many companies offer do-it-yourself email campaigns.  They offer layouts that are graphic-filled and “snazzy” looking.  And often they charge a hefty price for their services…these sort of situations should be avoided, even in lieu of self-designing and managing your email marketing campaign.  Better yet is to work with an internet marketing agency that offers email marketing campaign assistance.  An agency that you can trust to work with you, incorporating  your ideas into realistic methods.

You needn’t give up your goals and views in order to employ the practices of knowledgeable email marketers.  If your selected agency is indeed knowledgeable and worth any investment at all, then your ideas will be taken as top priority.
